The
Valley of Flowers National Park is the second core zone of the Nanda
Devi Biosphere Reserve.
The credit for the discovery of the Valley of Flowers goes to the British
mountaineers Franks S. Smythe and R.L. Holdsworth who incidentally reached this
valley after a successful expedition of Mount Kamet in 1931
Nanda Devi( 7818 mts), the beloved mountain Goddess of Garhwal Himalayas, whose teritories mark one of the highest national parks in the world , abounds some of the most fascinating mountain peaks e.gDunagiri (7066mts.), Changbang( 6864 mts), Kalanka(6932 mts), Rishipahar(6992 mts), Trishul I and II (7210 mts& 6319 mts), Mrigthuni (6565 mts), and Bethartolihemal(6352 mts), and some of the rare Himalayan fauna e.g snow leopard, musk deer, monal pheasant, with great variety of birds and butterflies and rare Himalayan flora.
All this can be encountered at its best on Kuari Pass trek, which starts at Auli, one of the best ski slopes (in winters) in Asia. The entire trek goes through excellent meadows and thick forests of oak, and fir (cedar), with extraordinary views of Mt. Nanda Devi- in different moods. The trek also involves negotiating a high pass i.eKuari(4268 Mts).
ITINERARY
DAY 01. RISHIKESH\ JOSHIMATH. DRIVE; 9-10 HRS. OVERNIGHT : HOTEL.
Early morning after breakfast drive to Joshimath. The entire drive is along the Alaknanda river till we reach Joshimath. Enroute stop at Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karanprayag, and Nanda prayag, the most famous confluences of Garhwal Himalayas. Arrive Joshimath and transfer to hotel. Dinner and overnight hotel.
DAY 02. JOSHIMATH/ AULI\ TALI.TREK: 5-6 HRS. OVERNIGHT : CAMP.
Early morning enjoy the sunrise on the Nanda Devi peak. After breakfast drive to Auli. Arrive Auli and commence the trek to Tali. The entire trek today is gradual ascent. ArriveTali and camp. Meals and overnight camp.
DAY 03. TALI\ KUARI PASS BASE. TREK:4-5 HRS. OVERNIGHT : CAMP.
Morning after breakfast trek to the base of Kuaripass. Enjoy the trek through the meadows with one of the best Panoramic views of the Himalayas. Packed lunch. Arrive & camp. Dinner & Overnight camp.
Valley of Flowers is a fairy-land situated high in the Himalayas of the Uttaranchal, at an altitude of 3,600 meters above the sea-level, protected by snowy mountains. Unknown to humans, for centuries this enchanting valley lay frozen during the colder months, and burst into its youthful beauty every year, as the snow melted with the advent of summer. Every year, the valley was splashed with color as it bloomed with hundreds of kinds of flowers, taking on various shades of colors as months progressed. Finally one day, nature condescended to bless humans with this heavenly sight, when Frank Smith - mountaineer, explorer, botanist - chanced upon it in the monsoon of 1931. He authored a book called "The Valley of Flowers" which unveiled the beauty and floral splendours of the valley and made the world sit up and watch. It was declared a national park in 1982, and now it is a World Heritage Site. The locals, of course, always knew of the existence of the valley, and believed that it was inhabited by fairies.
The valley is home to many celebrated flowers like the Brahmakamal, the Blue Poppy and the Cobra Lily. It is a much sought after haunt for flower-lovers, botanists and of course trekkers, for whom a sufficient excuse to embark on a mission to reach a place, is that it exists!
Day 4 : JOSHIMATH - GOVINDGHAT - GHANGRIA (3048 M/ 10000
ft)
Early morning we drive to Govindghat (22 km), starting point of our trek. From
here we will trek 14 km to reach Ghangria taking about 4-5 hrs. Overnight in
tents.
Day 5 : GHANGRIA - VALLEY OF FLOWERS (3658 M / 12000 ft) -
GHANGRIA
We will trek 5 km one way to reach the enchanting valley. Spend time here and
return to Ghangria in the evening. Total trekking time would be about 5-6 hrs.
Overnight in tents.
Day 6 : GHANGRIA - HEMKUND SAHIB (4329 M / 14200 ft) -
GHANGRIA
Today's climb of 6 km to Hemkund Sahib is steep at places and will take about 4
hrs. return trek will take about a couple of hours. Overnight in tents.
Day 7 : GHANGRIA - GOVINDGHAT - JOSHIMATH
On this day we will trek for about 3 hrs to reach Govindghat and from here drive
to Joshimath. Overnight in a Tourist Rest House.
Day 8 : JOSHIMATH - RISHIKESH
Early morning drive 244 km to reach Haridwar. TRIP ENDS HERE.
